Inhalation Sedation

Inhalation Sedation uses a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen to put you in a relaxed and comfortable state. During the procedure, you will wear a small, comfortable mask over your nose. You simply breathe in and out naturally through your nose during the treatment and let the gas have its relaxing effect on you. The effects wear off quickly once the gas is stopped, so you will be back to normal when you take the mask off at the end of the procedure.

What is nitrous oxide (laughing gas)?

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is also known as "laughing gas". It is colorless and odorless. It can be breathed naturally and comfortably through your nose throughout an entire treatment.

What does it feel like?

The main effect of laughing gas is to help you relax. You will feel a general sense of calm and well being. Many patients describe the feeling as pleasant and happy.

How fast does it work?

Laughing gas works very quickly. You will feel the calming effects within just a few minutes of putting on the mask. It also wears off very quickly. By the time you take your mask off at the end of the treatment, the gas will be gone from your system. This is a great advantage because you'll be able to drive yourself home and resume your normal activities right after the appointment.

How is it administered?

You will be given a small, comfortable mask that fills with the gas air mixture and fits over your nose and mouth. You can adjust the mask yourself so it's comfortable, and you simply breathe in and out naturally through your nose during your treatment.

Will I be unconscious?

No. You will be in a relaxed state, but will be conscious and able to respond to verbal instruction throughout the entire duration of the treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Laughing gas is known for having very few side effects, and it does not cause allergic reactions. This is one of the reasons that laughing gas is safe for use on patients of all ages.

Do I need someone to come with me?

No. The effects of inhalation sedation wear off quickly. Therefore, it is safe for you to drive to and from your appointment.

Can I go back to work the same day?

Yes. After your appointment you can resume all of your normal activities.
